Lately, horse abuse by some high-profile horse trainers has been in the news. Public outrage has been loud. It’s hard to imagine the perpetrators are unaware that what they do is animal abuse.
For the sake of your horse and yourself, always remember to make what are the really important reasons for choosing a trainer or teacher as the primary factors, and don’t be overly swayed by the others.
I received an email from a friend who has been reading my book, “The Essence Of Good Horsemanship.” She wrote, “…. the most frustrating thing about it is, the more I read of it, the more I question the ethics of riding which goes against everything I see on a daily basis.”
I’m going to talk a little about cleaning the sheath of stallions or geldings. I don’t relish discussing this topic, but I keep coming across people who believe it is an important part of horse husbandry.
The onus is on us to gain the knowledge to critically evaluate which expert is best for our horses. We can’t entirely surrender our horse’s welfare to strangers who only have a narrow view of the bigger picture. The responsibility is ours.
I think the video below is interesting and asks many questions that we all should consider. I post it here in the hope that it will help trigger people’s critical thinking skills when it comes to horsemanship and riding.
