I explained that the purpose of the groundwork was to better prepare a horse to be ridden. Everything we do should be connected to developing a better riding horse.
When a horse is initially trying to figure out something, there is a distinct lack of clarity in its mind about what are its best choices when confronted with pressure.
The horse world is awash with training methods for every aspect of dealing with horses from handling foals to competing at the highest levels in any given sport.
If you can't commit to the time to work with your horse then improving your skills is still achievable through lessons on school horses, etc. However, learning better skills without making enough time with your horse will leave your horse’s education stagnant.
I notice that very many schools of riding and training continue to focus largely on how a rider sits. If a rider does not sit well a horse cannot move correctly and can’t balance correctly. Almost everything that is wrong with a horse’s movement and balance can be corrected by how a rider rides.
A lack of clarity is the most common form of abuse we impose on horses. And to avoid being unclear, we must be crystal clear in ourselves if we are to have any chance of bringing clarity to a horse
