I am often asked why I do something a certain way in my training. Most teachers have at least some students who probe a little below the surface. But a question I am rarely asked is, "Why don’t you do it a different way?".
There seems to be widespread confusion between the principles that training methods are founded upon and the application of those principles. I have noticed over several years that both professional and amateur horse people confuse principles and methods a lot.
We should believe what we believe because we have been reasoned into it and not just accepted somebody else’s truth. Being reasoned into belief of our principles means we can be reasoned out of them when we discover they are wrong or some better ideas surface.
