Many years ago I had a client express their frustration at the progress they were making with their horse. They wondered if they had in them to ever be the horse person their horse needed them to be. They wanted to be like me and asked how did I do it.
I said I made a choice. A choice to work with hundreds and thousands of horses and learn from each one. And a choice to study and learn from the best horsemanship I could find.
We all have the same alpha helix DNA made up of the same four base pairs. The arrangement of the base pairs may vary slightly from person to person but we are all essentially the same when broken down into our elements.
We are all capable of great kindness and capable of great cruelty
We are all capable of great fortitude and great weakness
We are all capable of great intelligence and incredible stupidity
We are all capable of great love and intense hate
We are all capable of tremendous caring and generosity but also great thoughtlessness and selfishness
We are all capable of an impressive work ethic and equally impressive laziness
We are capable of great cowardice and great bravery
We are all the same.
The difference between us is in the choices we make.
I don’t know if my pep talk was much help or not, but my client and her horse eventually became a pretty good team.
